This year marks the 100th anniversary of Shackleton and the crew of the ‘Endurance’ reaching Elephant Island.
Their ship had become trapped in the ice and subsequently was crushed and sank ten months later.
After a daring journey that saw them reach Elephant Island in April 1916, Shackleton took five crew members to find help and crossed 1300km of ocean in a small boat. The remaining men from the ‘Endurance’ were rescued in August.
Amazingly, not one member of the expedition died.
This expedition is currently being celebrated in a photographic exhibition at the Royal Geographical Society.
ESSE is proud to have supplied the ‘Mrs Sam’ cooker used by Shackleton and his crew on an earlier expedition. This cookstove provided the crucial heat and calorific meals the men needed to survive. It can still be seen in Shackleton’s hut at Cape Royds via Google Maps.
