Florence Nightingale, born May 12th 1820 is recognised as the founder of modern nursing. May 12th is International Nurses Day in her honour.
Nightingale came to prominence during the Crimean War where she organised care for wounded soldiers. It seems the ESSE Stove, referred to in her letter, was used for heating, cooking and boiling water. Nightingale was an advocate of washing hands frequently and some of her writing is dedicated to the importance of hot nutritional meals in military camps and field hospitals.
Our short film features a letter of thanks sent by Florence Nightingale. The film was made with help and images courtesy of The Florence Nightingale Museum Trust.
